So you’ve heard of the standard daytime caching, but have you heard of extreme nighttime caching? Prepare yourself for a never-before-seen adventure through the forgotten walls of a 19th-century French fortress. Dark twists and turns await you at every mysterious corner in this daring Letterbox Hybrid! This Geocache of the Week is for those who like to play in the dark and are up for one intense challenge; welcome to Extrem4 -” Stonerose” – Nachtcache (GCTWJ1).

We didn’t think you were brave enough to embark on this ultra-challenging cache, but we’re glad you’re here. To begin your quest to find GCTWJ1, you must start after the sun sets and should not carry out the mission alone. Gather all of your best geocaching teammates as each person will have a special task throughout the night–for this cache, teamwork is key!

Hold up! Before we go too far, let’s take a moment and gather all of the equipment needed for this journey. To ensure success, you will need the following items:

  1. UV flashlight
  2. Paracord
  3. Metal hook (15in/40cm)
  4. Duct tape
  5. Magnet
  6. Mirror
  7. Magnifying glass

Now that you’re fully prepared, we can continue! Make your way to the first location, where you will discover a set of stone stairs with particular instructions on what you are looking for—we would tell you what you need to find but don’t want to spoil it for you. However, if you do need a hint along the way, please check the cache page; this is where you will find extra hints and helpful pictures of notable landmarks.

It may be too late to mention this, but claustrophobia and arachnophobia will not come in handy while you make your way through the night, as you will find yourself in very tight and dusty spaces! As you make your way through the fortress, you will be presented with new rooms and intriguing challenges like fighting in slim spaces, climbing trees, and repelling off of walls.

Moving along, you will be directed toward a big hole; this is where the UV light and hook will come in handy. Then you will pass through the narrow and cold walls of the meat chamber, through the room of shooting stars, and finally, land in the space of what the cache owner Doomritterbande calls, “Locomotivbreath.”

Thankfully, you’ve come prepared with your magnet, and your best geo-pal with 20/20 vision, as a set of eagle eyes are necessary at this checkpoint. Hopefully one of you is not afraid of heights because you will be flying higher than ever at this location. Also, here’s a tip… don’t drop anything!

As the clock ticks on through the night, you are getting closer to the final location and the last stage to this hardcore geocache! After that, you have a few more opportunities to crawl through tiny spaces and hang out with some more creepy-crawly bugs.

Congratulations! You have finally reached the final two stages of this Letterbox Hybrid. Pull out your handy magnet one more time to inspect the area for clues. Please read the instructions for this room carefully as it will set you up for the final location where the cache is hiding. One remaining space awaits you once you are ready to move on, called Doomsday. Hey—that’s what Doomritterbande called it, not us.

As you check over your final coordinates and locate the resting place of this geocache, you will feel overwhelming happiness and a sense of accomplishment now that you have completed this night-long extreme quest through the fortress.

Well done, geocacher! You are now one of the ~1,000 brave souls that have attempted and completed this considerable feat since the cache was placed in 2006. It’s a must-do cache for anyone who is up for a mind-bending, physically demanding challenge. We’re happy you were up to the task. One last thing before we go: don’t forget to take a picture of your geocaching crew to remember such an incredible night. Until next time—if you dare!
