Geocaching has a way of leading us on new adventures to undiscovered locations and views. We have decided to revisit some Geocaches of the Week to show off some of our favorite caches.
This week we’re traveling to Norway to revisit Kjerag (GCXKXJ), a geocache we featured almost seven years ago. The coordinates are on top of Kjerag, a mountain in the Sandnes municipality. Kjerag has many breathtaking photo opportunities. It overlooks the spectacular fjord Lysefjorden, and on a clear day, you can see for miles.
One of the best places to snap a photo while you are visiting Kjerag is Kieragbolten, a rock that is 5-cubic-meters of glacial deposit wedged in the mountain’s crevasse. It is suspended above a 3,228 ft deep abyss!
Many geocachers have come far and wide to make the trek up the mountain for a glimpse of the neverending view and to find GCXKXJ. The elevation and location of this cache make it only available in the summertime months, May through September.
You will start your travel by car through the beautiful Sirdalen valley to the trailhead. The hike up the mountain to the cache consists of winding paths between large boulders, a few stretches through tall canyons, and you will even stroll over grassy-covered rocks to get to the top. As you near the end of the hike to the lookout, that is when the hike turns from a walk into a steep final climb.
Since we originally published GCXKXJ as Geocache of the Week back in July of 2014, it has grown in popularity with nearly 780 finds and accumulated 230 amazing photographs. Finding the cache itself is not too difficult, it is an ammo can nestled in a deep slot and secured by stones near the lookout.
This geocache is a must-find for a lot of travelers as this is one of the most popular places to visit in Norway. You can often find BASE jumpers geared up with parachutes ready to make the leap as it is a favorite recreational activity for the area. Geocachers, however, can spend hours at the top looking out over the world. Venturesome geocachers that make the day trip up to the top of Kjerag to log GCXKXJ leave with breathtaking photos and lasting memories of the highest peak in Lysefjord.
